How Casino Bonuses Work

A casino deposit bonus, also known as a sticky bonus or match bonus, is when an online casino gives a depositing player additional value on top of their deposit amount. Deposit bonuses may be part of a welcome package and they can also be offered to existing casino customers as a reload bonus. There are two types of casino deposit bonuses, sticky and non-sticky bonuses

How a Casino Deposit Bonus (or Match Deposit Bonus) Works

Example: Match deposit bonus – 100% up to €100, 30x wagering on both deposit + bonus.

  1. Paul activates a 100% up to €100 deposit bonus by depositing €50 and receiving a €50 bonus.
  2. In total Paul has €100 to play with (deposit balance of 50€ + a bonus balance of €50).
  3. In order to complete the wagering requirement Paul needs to wager €3000 [(50 + 50) * 30].
  4. If Paul manages to convert the bonus successfully by completing the wagering requirement, the funds will become cashable.
  5. If not, the bonus can end in three ways, either Paul loses his deposit and bonus balance and therefore the bonus ends, or it expires, or Paul decides to cancel before completing the wagering requirement in which case the bonus funds and any winnings will be forfeited.

Other Examples of Deposit Bonuses

100% up to €100 + 30 Free Spins. Min deposit €20 | 30x wagering for both deposit bonus & Free Spins Win

  1. Refer to the match deposit bonus example above and add on 30 Free Spins to the offer.
  2. Paul take his 30 Free Spins and ends up winning €3. The €3 is referred to as Paul’s free spin winnings. These need to be wagered 30x before they can be withdrawn. So Paul needs to wager a further €90.
  3. If Paul manages to convert the successfully by completing the wagering requirement, the funds will become cashable.
  4. If not, the free spins win can end in three ways, either Paul loses free spins winnings or it expires, or Paul decides to cancel before completing the wagering requirement in which case the free spins win will be forfeited.

200% up to €100, Min deposit 20 | 30x wagering on both deposit + bonus

  1. Jenny deposits €20 and gets €60 to play with (deposit balance of 20€ + a bonus balance of €40).
  2. In order to complete the wagering requirement Jenny needs to wager €1800 [(20 + 40) * 30].
  3. If Jenny manages to convert the bonus successfully by completing the wagering requirement, the funds will become cashable.
  4. If not, the bonus can end in three ways, either Jenny loses her deposit and bonus balance and therefore the bonus ends, or it expires, or Jenny decides to cancel before completing the wagering requirement in which case the bonus funds and any winnings will be forfeited.

50% up to €500, Min deposit €20 | 30x wagering on both deposit + bonus

  1. Jenny deposits €20 and gets €30 to play with (deposit balance of 20€ + a bonus balance of €10).
  2. In order to complete the wagering requirement Jenny needs to wager €900 [(20 + 10) * 30].

What is the difference between a sticky and non sticky deposit bonus?

A Casino Bonus or Sticky Bonus

  1. Your restricted cash and bonus balance are mixed
  2. The wagering can be applied to both deposit + bonus, or just the bonus.
  3. The restricted cash + bonus funds = bonus balance.
  4. The only way to withdraw your bonus balance is to either convert the bonus by completing the wagering requirement, or by cancelling the bonus, or if the bonus expires.
  5. If you cancel the bonus or the bonus expires, you lose the bonus funds + winnings, but any remaining cash becomes withdrawable.

Non Sticky Bonuses

  1. Also known as a second life or a lifeline bonus.
  2. The cash and bonus balance are kept separate.
  3. You start playing with your cash balance first.
  4. The cash balance & winnings can be withdrawn (however you will forfeit the bonus balance).
  5. If you use the bonus balance, the wagering requirement applies (on the bonus balance only).

A non-sticky casino bonus (also known as a ‘lifeline bonus’) is like a standard casino deposit bonus however the deposit is not restricted and not tied to any wagering requirements,

Should the player be lucky enough to hit a good win whilst using their deposit balance, they are allowed to withdraw their win as well as their remaining deposit.

However – if the player decides to withdraw their bonus balance will be forfeited.

Should the player decide to continue playing, once their deposit balance is depleted, the bonus balance becomes restricted until its lost or the wagering requirement is completed.

Example of a Non Sticky Bonus.

  1. Also known as a second life or a lifeline bonus.
  2. The cash and bonus balance are kept separate.
  3. You start playing with your cash balance first.
  4. The cash balance & winnings can be withdrawn (however you will forfeit the bonus balance).
  5. If you use the bonus balance, the wagering requirement kicks in (on the bonus balance only).

Why don’t all online casinos offer non sticky bonuses?

Non sticky bonuses came about further to the “Fair and transparent terms and practices” set out by the UK Gambling commission to control how licensed online operators manage their promotions. The aim is for online casino promotions to be clearly displayed, communicated and fair for both the operator and the player.

If an online operator is not licensed in by the UK Gambling Commission and does not target UK players then they are not obliged to follow these rules. For this reason you might come across sticky casino bonuses. Find out what tactics savvy casino players use to try to convert bonuses.

Can I play a non sticky bonus if I am not a UK player?

Check the terms and conditions of the bonus before playing to understand whether the bonus is a sticky or non sticky bonus.

In general if a casino builds its bonus engine to conform with the terms expected for a non sticky bonus then all players taking the offer (no matter their country) will get the same bonus. However if their bonus engine is built to work differently based on the location of the player, then the only way to know this is to check the terms.

Are Casino Deposit Bonuses worth it?

Casino deposit bonuses such as match deposit bonuses essentially double your bankroll thus you end up with longer playing time. Whether they are worth it or not depends on what type of player you are. If you are looking to get in, play and withdraw any lucky wins without having to wager anything, then a deposit bonus is not really for you.

On the other hand if you are looking for longer hours of fun and entertainment, then you should claim a deposit bonus once you have gone through the terms and conditions and are happy with them.
